Critical and Creative Thinking
A school wide Critical and Creative Thinking Program; Kindergarten – Year 6; where thinking is valued, modelled and evident through multiple planned and integrated opportunities.
The Critical and Creative Program is strongly scaffolded with routines that are scoped and sequenced for each different age group.
Critical and Creative thinking is highly valued by all staff who encourage students to open their minds to new ideas, be conscious of their own thinking, question ideas and separate emotional and logical thinking.
The program is designed to stimulate creativity towards new and original ideas that are innovative and divergent. Students are encouraged to take risks and share ideas with others in an environment where multiple answers are possible. Our inclusive setting promotes difference in thinking, and opportunities to justify ideas.
In years 4 – 6 students will be given the opportunity to deepen their journey with Critical and Creative Thinking through engagement in Tournament of Minds at regional level and beyond.
ICT and Digital Technologies
Information Communication and Technology competence is highly valued. The ICT program involves all Pre-primary to year 6 students.
Classes engage in explicit instructional lessons to develop sequenced skills in the use of computers and iPads that are integrated across the curriculum in their daily learning to investigate, create and communicate.
Golden Bay Primary School works in conjunction with Comet Bay College to build on and extend ICT. This work is moving students from ICT users to creators – with design, system and computational thinking.
In 2018 we will enter two developmental teams in the Regional Lego League competition.
Languages – Japanese
In 2018 year three students commenced their learning journey to grow their competency with speaking and understanding conversational Japanese.
By 2021 all students from years three to six will engaged with the Japanese language.
Our sister city in Japan is AKO. We have hosted students and staff from AKO since opening the school in 2015. We look forward to our continued partnership with the City of Rockingham and our guests from AKO. Their visits continue to enrich the lives of students at Golden Bay Primary School.
Music
At Golden Bay Primary School the music program is a key aspect of the arts based focus we are fostering in our school community. Learning music has been shown to promote creativity and critical thinking. Through the creative process of music, students strengthen their skills in understanding and evaluating information.
An emphasis is also placed on integrating the learning of music with technology to further enhance the development of digital literacy and ICT skills.
YEARS Pre-primary-2
Initially the music program enables students to discover and develop a natural love of music. Learning occurs through a range of music based games and activities as well as rich musical topics. The playing of basic tuned and un-tuned percussion instruments serve to increase student awareness and understanding of simple melodic and rhythmic patterns found in various short simple songs.
YEARS 3-6
Expanding on existing concepts, students are introduced to more formalised musical literacy. Music. Emphasis is placed on each student experiencing the success, confidence and enjoyment when producing music vocally and instrumentally. This is developed through introducing students to a range of purposely built diatonic instruments including xylophones, marimbas and a variety of other tuned and un-tuned percussion instruments on which they learn, rehearse and perform musical items in ensemble.
BANDWAGON
Bandwagon offers a specialised music subject for students in years three to six. This program is designed to support students in learning and practising a formal musical instrument in a group setting.
Performing and Visual Arts
Students from Pre-Primary – 6 are actively involved in our Visual and Performing Art program.
Musicals are performed at the Mandurah Performing Arts Centre to an audience of parents, family members and invited staff from across our region.
Our yearly art exhibition titled ‘Arts By The Bay’ has grown significantly since 2015 and is held annually at our school to celebrate student work. The exhibition is always well attended by parents and the wider community who are amazed by the quality of the work on display.

Students in Kindergarten and Pre-Primary engage in structured outdoor activities.
Positive Behaviour Support
All students are engaged with the whole school Positive Behaviour Support curriculum based around our three key school values – Excellence, Respect and Integrity.
Research notes that staff and student engagement with the Positive Behaviour Support ((PBS) framework supports increased academic performance, improved safety, decreased problem behaviours and supports a positive school culture through informed decision making.
A continuous improvement team monitors the embedding of this systematic and planned work through use of school data and visible whole school practice.
Science and Sustainability
Student learning is supported by developing scientific investigation, knowledge and understandings using the comprehensive ‘Primary Connections’ science program. This learning is inclusive of other learning areas such as technology and mathematics when completing projects to solve real world problems.
Students in Years 4 – 6 work with Coast Care in caring for and monitoring our local environment and restoration for a sustainable future. There is strong involvement with the local community and Lions Club in re-planting and caring for our local dunes.
